Goal Statement
TO IMPROVE STUDENT READING COMPREHENSION FROM KINDERGARTEN TO GRADE 6
Rationale for this School Goal
Based on student achievement indicators, Reading Comprehension is the area of most challenge for our students. In response, our school is undertaking a number of innovative strategies aimed at improving reading skills, such as Language for Learning at Kindergarten and grade 1, Successful Sight Reading at grade 1 and 2, the Rewards Program at Grade 4, and Reading 44 strategies in all of our Intermediate classrooms. We are in an opportune position to see significant improvements in Reading Comprehension over the next couple of years.
As part of our new focus on reading comprehension, we looked for opportunities to offer new and exciting curricula to our students. We have now solidly integrated the Read Naturally Program, Language for Learning, Talking Tables, and an integrated intermediate novel study grouped by screened ability. This year we hope to include the PALS program and a Strong Start pre-school in our initiatives.
